Revolutionizing Imaging: The World’s Smallest Camera Module by OmniVision

OmniVision has introduced the OVM6948 CameraCubeChip®, the world’s smallest commercially available camera module. Measuring just 0.65 mm x 0.65 mm with a height of 1.158 mm, it is derived from the OV6948 image sensor, which holds the Guinness World Record for being the tiniest image sensor at 0.575 mm x 0.575 mm.

This miniature camera is designed primarily for medical applications and is ideal for use in disposable medical devices like guidewires, catheters, and endoscopes with diameters as small as 1.0 mm. Its compact size allows healthcare professionals to perform procedures in narrow and hard-to-reach areas of the body, such as blood vessels. The camera is particularly suited for fields like cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, and ENT procedures.

The OVM6948 delivers a 200 x 200 pixel resolution, a 120-degree wide field of view, and a focus range extending from 3 mm to 30 mm. It supports video capture at 30 frames per second and performs well even in low-light conditions, thanks to its advanced backside illumination technology. Additionally, it consumes just 25 mW of power, ensuring minimal heat production and greater patient comfort during procedures.

While primarily developed for medical use, the sensor is versatile enough to be applied in dental, veterinary, industrial, wearable technology, forensic devices, and even Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Its small size and impressive imaging capabilities make it an ideal solution for various fields requiring detailed visual access in tight spaces.

The OVM6948’s innovative design has been widely praised for its potential to revolutionize minimally invasive procedures and other areas where ultra-compact imaging solutions are needed. Its capabilities are a testament to the advancements in technology that aim to improve precision and patient care.
